Lip Service

Take a deeeeeeep breath. Smell that? Spring is in the air, muthcluckas. I always look forward to this time of year because 1) hello? those gorgeous spring temps! and 2) as nature blooms, so do my creative juices. From switching up my style to trying (and failing, let’s be honest) to recreate those fancy pinterest hairdos, spring always inspires me to come out of my beauty hibernation. I find one of the easiest ways to either change up or complete a look is choosing an awesome lip color, but in the winter, I’m a one shade + balm kind of gal. While my lip color collection is dragon’s hoard vast (what’s red, black, and blue all over? My lipstick collection), I tend to lean pretty heavily on the same neutral, mauve-y pink (or vampy burgundy for those special occasions) in these colder months. So, with that in mind (and in case you too are in a beauty rut), here are a few of the shades I’m stoked to rock this spring…

(Bonus? They’re mostly drugstore. You’re welcome in advance).

A Nude Attitude – A good nude lipstick is like a good LBD – they’re good for almost every occasion and everyone should have one, but they’re not always easy to find. People come in a million shades, so it only makes sense that nude lipsticks do too! Sometimes it takes a little trial and error (or a whole lotta swatches), but like Goldilocks, with enough determination, you too can find the one that’s juuuust right.

How Now Brown Lip? – I can’t deny it anymore – the 90s are back and it looks like they’re here to stay. From chokers to tiny floral prints to grungy flannels, this pre-millennia decade is having a resurgence not seen since the last resuscitation of the 70s. I resisted its siren call for as long as I could, but then this brown lipstick fell into my lap, and guys? I think I’m in love. There’s just something about it that makes me feel like the coolest indie chick to ever turn a sensitive jock’s head in a movie about misunderstood youths.

Berry, Berry, Quite Contrary – If you’re as attached to your deep burgundy shades as I am, you’re probably a little anxious about giving up winter’s vamp for spring’s rebirth. Not to fear! Ease your way into the light with progressively lighter berry shades until one day (probably just around the start of summer if I had to wager) you’ll find you’re just wearing pink.

Red-y Or Not, Here I Come! – Fashions may change in the blink of an eye, but there are a few things that will be classic forever. Trench coats, blue jeans, white Ts, and of course, a red lip. There are few situations in life that are not improved by a red lip… except for maybe pulling that aforementioned white T over your head. I love one with blue undertones because it makes my teeth seem brighter!

Violet, You’re Turning Violet! – UGH. I love a good purple. It’s fun and funky, yet surprisingly wearable and versatile. That’s right, I said versatile. To be honest, it’s easily the most wearable of the “Not Yo Mamma’s” lip colors. Don’t believe me? Try wearing purple in any situation you’d normally wear pink in (…unless you were planning on wearing purple) for a look that’s both unexpected and daring!

Maternity MVPs

I’m just about at the end of this crazy trip, and I thought it would be nice to reflect on the clothing items that were really there for me throughout this whole process. I came up with a capsule wardrobe plan at one point, and I more or less followed it – so everything in my closet has been worn a lot at this point. However, there have been three pieces that have really stood out as the MVPs of my maternity wardrobe:

Black Jeans

If I had to go through all of this all over again, but with only one pair of pants, I would pick these black skinny jeans. Hands. Down. They worked for casual outfits and for all but the dressiest work occasions. It doesn’t hurt that this particular pair is super comfortable.

Jersey Knit Blazer

I’m sure I could have gotten away with wearing normal blazers… but… these are stretchy. And that means comfy while still looking more professional than yet another cardigan.  Being able to look several degrees sharper without sacrificing comfort has been invaluable.

Skinny Jeans

Beyond being a straight up wardrobe staple, a great pair of skinny jeans goes a loooooooong way towards making you feel like you’re still a normal person wearing normal clothing. Sure, you’re going to feel like crap, and things are going to hurt, and you’re going to be super tired, but you can take a huge amount of comfort in knowing that you can still grab a pair of jean and at least *look* more or less like a regular human being for a change. I reach for mine so often, they’re about 2 threads away from developing a massive hole in a sub-par location. Worth every penny.
