Artist in Residence

Remember, like, two months ago when we said we were going talk a little more about our passions (beyond our passion for fashion that is)? Well, I thought I’d take a moment to talk about something that’s always been a guiding light and a driving force in my life: art. I’ve talked briefly about it before, but today I thought I’d expand on that. So, if you came here for an outfit, come back tomorrow – I promise there will be one. But if you were wondering why I know and care so much about color theory, read on!

I’ve been a #CreativeWeirdo for as long as I can remember. As a kid, I would write and illustrate my own stories and preferred art class to all other classes (especially gym class which was my own gangly, awkward, uncoordinated, personal circle of hell). Seriously! I was the kind of kid who would take boring stuff like math and PE during summer school so that I could take more fine arts classes during the regular school year (#majornerd). But I’ve always appreciated the perspective and edge my creativity has given me even if others don’t (I once had a painting professor stand behind me while I worked and after 5 or 6 minutes of observing my progress declared, “You have a strange brain” and then just walked. the. hell. away. To this day I don’t know if it was an insult or a compliment #TrueStory). I mean, this same innate “why the hell not?” willingness to step outside the box lead me to blue lipstick…

So you're in charge around here, is that fair to say? #AbsolutelyImTheBoss #livingthatvelociraptorlife

…so it can’t be all that bad, right? Plus, all this spatial awareness means I can Tetris like a mofo, so I’m basically the best friend you can possibly have on moving day (besides big, burly dudes who can lift things, because I definitely can’t do a lot of that #SkeletorArmProblems). Today I use my art skills for a lot of different things (including the photo editing, collage making, and branding of this very blog). Some of them are meaningful…

Some are dumb and hilarious to basically only me…

And some of them are just little pick me ups for when the world is a little meh for my tastes.

I mean, we could all use a reminder to keep on keepin’ on every once in a while, right? So consider this one mine to you: go out there and do the thing. I don’t know what the thing is for you, but I trust that you do. So get out there and go for it, because you and I both know from experience that we’re happier when we’re hustling. We can do it, I believe in us.
