It was bound to happen eventually. You were bound to get at least one invite to a holiday party that didn’t encourage you to don the most garish knitwear that money can buy (or Michael’s can craft). That’s right, there are actually folks out there that celebrate without the aid of hilariously ugly sweaters or onesies. DON’T PANIC. I’ve got you covered! Here are some tips and tricks for being festive without the fug:
- Don’t sweater the small stuff: Remember these three little words: Knits are neat! They’re like the Carlton Banks to the Fresh Prince’s hoodie – dressy but still here to have fun (and dance). A thick cable knit cardigan is a cozy way to play with texture while thinner weaves allow for lovely layering. Oh and a sweater dress and leggings? Yeah, they’re basically chic pjs you can wear to the store without judgement. So… you’re welcome.
- It’s rad to be plaid: Tartan? Check. Windowpane? Check. Gingham? Check. Checked? CHECK! Yup, Fall’s favorite print is definitely holiday season approved. So try dressing up your flannel with a dressy skirt and a sparkly statement necklace or take your sweater to a whole nutha level of cozy with a blanket scarf and boots. Engaging in a little caroling this holiday season? A plaid coat would probably look extra cute with a mug of wassail, I’m just saying.
- All is calm, all is white: Monochromatic looks are an easy way to look put together and a minimalistic outfit in a gorgeous winter white? SO snow queen chic! Toss those old fuddy duddy rules about not wearing white after Labor Day right out the frost covered window and slip into some dreamy creams. The key to not looking like a lost beach bum is making sure your outfit has a little substance to it. A fabric with a little more weight (like a heavier knit or wool) makes sure your look doesn’t drift away in a snowbank.
- Sprinkle in some sparkle: Glitter and sequins and rhinestones, oh my! Looking for a look with maximum impact that requires minimal effort? When in doubt, shine out! Adding shine is a surefire way to crank the holiday spirit up to 11 (just be sure to balance it with some sensible solids to avoid looking like a disco ball). I mean, we can’t let those trees and their twinkling lights have all the fun, can we?
