We here at FBC love any reason to celebrate. Give us an occasion, we are here to cheer. And we find that we get the most excited about birthdays. Not just our birthdays, any birthdays! (In fact, we would argue that the only thing more wonderful than celebrating your birthday is celebrating someone else’s birthday. Think about it: all the joy and happiness and none of the “getting a year older” junk, it’s a win/win.) And today, our festive mood is inspired by a very special birthday indeed: Soft Surroundings is turning 11!
If you don’t know Soft Surroundings, they are an amazing brand born right here in St. Louis that specializes in apparel, accessories and bedding for women of all ages. And hi, when the word “soft” is in the name, you know that ish is gonna be comfy (Spoiler: everything is insanely comfy. Like E.Ve.Ry.Thing) So Soft Surrounding really checks all of our boxes: Stylish? Totally. Cozy? You betcha. Easy to shop with 39 stores around the country and an amazing website? Heck yeah! So for all these reasons, and many more, Jeanne and Emily are joining in on the Soft Surroundings birthday hoopla in a very cool way (we can say that because it was their idea). We are styling our favorite cute and comfy Fall outfits at our favorite STL spots. Emily and Jeanne are St. Louis natives just like Soft Surroundings, and we always appreciate a chance to wax poetic about our hometown!
When it came to picking my favorite St. Louis spot, it really was no contest. For me, the location that has had the most impact on me throughout my life is actually the Muny in Forest Park. For those who may not know, the Muny is a 99 year old outdoor theater, one of the largest and oldest in the country, and it has a pretty amazing history. Name a favorite performer, they probably worked there…including yours truly! That’s right, for a full decade of my childhood, I performed on the Muny stage in over 15 performances and I loved every second of it. I played a munchkin, an orphan, a flower, a Broadway baby, a disciple, and more townspeople than I care to name (ok, so I wasn’t a star, I still was up there!). This spot holds such amazing memories for me; it is the place I first discovered the magic of live theater, where I met some of the most incredible and talented people I have ever had the privilege of knowing, and (if you really want to get sappy), where T. and I took our engagement photos. I literally cannot see this beautiful building without feeling my hear swell a size or two. And to top it all off, it makes the perfect background for this gorgeous Soft Surroundings sweater! Is there anything the magical Muny can’t do?

My favorite place in St. Louis? Psh, that’s easy! The fine arts have always played a huge role in my education as both an artist and a citizen of the world and the St. Louis Art Museum is my favorite teacher. When I was a kid, it was making masks out of milk jugs on our fourth grade field trips and exploring imagination through hands on creativity. As an art major, it was examining the master works and trying to understand what made them great (and occasionally wondering if that still life painting wasn’t some exercise their art teacher made them do too because seriously, who paints fruit that much?). As an adult? It is my happy place, my zen garden, my bridge over troubled water in times of uncertainty. When the world gets a little too noisy and overwhelmingly chaotic, a quiet afternoon spent amongst the works of the masters is exactly the chicken soup this (not even remotely teenage) soul needs. And have you guys seen the new wing? I die. So many of my favorite artists in one gorgeous new space! So when it came time to curate an outfit around this work of art from Soft Surroundings (y’all know I love a good statement necklace), I found myself inspired to take a cue from my old friend SLAM and juxtapose the grand and ornate with some clean modern lines (and toss a blue lip in there for good measure, obviously).
