You all may have noticed this skirt made it’s blog debut last week, but I felt it deserved just a bit more fanfare (and I wanted to give myself the chance to style it with my full closet at my disposal).
I think this skirt perfectly exemplifies my feelings on “wardrobe staples” or “basics”…in that I kind of suck at them. When it comes to basics, I have a real problem buying the simple, everybody has one kind of pieces (the lowest common denominator, if you will. Or won’t, since I am not quite certain what that means. We all know I can’t math right?). Instead, I’d rather take the leap with something that has those details that give it just a hint of wow. For example, a pleated midi skirt in a neutral color palate is the perfect summer to fall transition piece and an ideal wardrobe staple…but if you are me, you buy it in metallic (because what is more special than metallic? Nothing, that’s what). Perhaps not the most basic, but is sure does make me happy.
And what you end up discovering is those basic plus pieces end up being just as wearable as any old run of the mill staple, with the added benefit of making you feel just a bit more unique (which is always my goal, whether intentional or not so much. #ThePerksOfBeingTheOppositeOfAWallflower). So while I continue to fight my instincts and just bite the bullet on those much-needed little black dresses and perfect white tees, every so often, I let myself say ok to that piece that is one fun degree of separation of basic.
