Falling A Little

I’ve spent over half of my professional life working in educational settings, both in and out of the classroom. Combine that with my typical 17 years of formal schooling, and you have a straight up Pavlovian response to the first day of school. To me, the first day of school has always been synonymous with the first day of fall. This was all well and good when I was growing up and school started after Labor Day, but it got a little weird once I moved to St. Louis and had to start teaching in mid-August.

Now that I’m not the one in the classroom anymore, I try to set a hard limit of September 1st as the real start of fall… but old habits die hard, and as soon as some of the local teachers I know started heading back to the classroom, bits of fall started creeping back into my wardrobe. Case in point: these blissfully fall cognac booties I scored during the Nordstrom Anniversary sale a few weeks back. But between you and me, I’m more than happy to have an excuse to wear them a little earlier – waiting until September would have been worse than that first 6am wakeup call of the school year!
