You’ve heard it said, “everything old is new again”. Well nowhere is it more true than in fashion. Perhaps it’s because there are only so many ways a person can design pants or a shirt, but it does seem that trends are on about a 10-20 year cycle that you can almost set your watch to. Sure, sometimes designers get a bit creative (one shoulder, two shoulder, off shoulder, cold shoulder: the new fashion book by Dr. Seuss), but on the whole, things tend to stay the same more than they change.
I would argue it’s actually kind of cool to know you are wearing a piece of clothing that is similar to one your mom, or her mom, or even her mom, wore before you. Take this drop-waisted dress. Sure, the color and pattern are a bit modern, but the cut is straight out of the roaring twenties. Which means I, a woman who’s rarely fought for anything beyond the remote or the last cookie, am wearing a style that many women fought against a seriously strong and scary patriarchy to wear. I think that kind of history is amazing, and taking a moment to think of it as you get dressed for the day is definitely worth the time.
So whether you’re bringing back the 70’s, the 90’s or the 80’s (and by that, I mean the 1880’s, you go in your hoop skirt lady friend!), I say take a moment to thank those women who came before you and blazed the trail. And then, take your look to the street and rock it as only 2016 you could!
