When I was a little bit younger, spring was my favorite time of year for two reasons: 1) The weather is dope as hell (is… is that how the kids are saying it these days?) and 2) prom season, muthacluckas. Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Emily. Girl. You do not seem like the prom-y type”. Well, friend, you’re not wrong. I didn’t enjoy prom so much as prom dresses. My friends and I delighted in running around on a Saturday afternoon and making it our goal to find the most absurd taffeta confection. While I can’t toss on the nearest chiffon nightmare for amusement anymore (after a certain age, it because less funny and more sad), that let’s-try-on-the-loudest-thing-imaginable instinct still rears its head this time of year… Which is how I found myself standing in a Banana Republic dressing room having a mini-quarter life crisis. Ladies and gentlemen, meet the pants that broke my brain and have me considering a crop top for the first time in my life. When I spotted these, I gleefully snatched them up and headed to the dressing room. “These are simply too much”, I laughed to myself. But then I put them on and you guys? They’re beautiful. What was unwieldy and over the top on the hanger, somehow makes perfect sense on the body. Instead of looking like the big top circus act I was anticipating, I feel like a super cool 70s bombshell. And do you know what? I’ve never been happier to discover that the joke’s on me.
