Working It

If there’s one thing I’m really struggling with lately, it’s putting together outfits for my work days that require a touch more professionalism. My everyday office dress code is “snappy casual” which, aside from being hilarious and fun to say, is something I’m pretty darn good at. But occasionally I have to kick it up a notch and be more business, less snappy. And guys, the struggle is real.

I can’t even blame these issues on having access to fewer clothing options – my wardrobe has always revolved around a snappy casual lifestyle (and about a bajillion plaid items). No, I blame my issues on a lack of vision about what exactly constitutes my ideal slightly-more-business-than-casual look (pretty sure I even say in my bio that I’m still figuring out this whole dressing myself thing – just keeping it real, folks). Do I prefer dresses? Are skirts a better option? Do I even LIKE pants?  All of these are questions I ask myself while online shopping (before I click buy on yet another plaid shirt, of course).

Anyway, this is my latest stab at looking like a slightly more serious professional. I kept it dark and simple, but with fun texture (lace! suede!) and simple-yet-bold accessories. I think I did ok, and I’m pretty sure it’ll all get easier from here.

Thankfully, I remembered the cardinal rule of fashion: when in doubt, add a cat.

See? Works every time.

  1. I love the texture in your top, it makes the black top and cardi work so well together. This is a great option for a business casual office too!

My go-to for being slightly more business is always just to add a blazer, ha! Even in summer, I might not wear it outside but it’s always cold enough in the office air conditioning to add a blazer!

  2. Lovely fall color combination! The texture of your top is a great detail. You could try swapping out your skinnies for trousers or a pencil skirt for a more professional look. Another option would be keep the skinnies and add a blazer. Thanks for linking up with Fabulous Friday!
