Despite my love of experimentation when it comes to fashion, I am someone that abides by some serious hard and fast clothing rules. One, just because it is trendy does not mean it is flattering (learned that one that hard way in high school, thanks low rise jeans). Two, even if it looks great, if you’re not comfortable, you are going to be miserable. And three, do not mix navy/black/brown (Funny story: I have an ex-boyfriend who is still one of my closest friends, and one time back when we were together he was almost an hour late for a date. When I asked him why, he said he had to go back home because he realized he was wearing a navy belt with black shoes and knew I would not approve. He’s one of the good ones.)
But rules are meant to be broken right? Good, because that is what I am telling myself with this outfit.
I bought this vest a few weeks ago on a whim; I kept seeing my fashion blogging brethren with these fantastic structured vests and thought “why not me?”. And then I got the vest home, where I realized the answer to that question was “oh, because it will work with literally nothing in your closet, that’s why not.” I am telling you guys, I put this vest on with EVERYTHING and nothing worked. I was about to return it when I remembered my white and navy striped dress. At that point I was exhausted and while I heard the voice in the back of my head saying “Black and navy? NOOO!” I also heard the louder voice saying “What’s the worst that could happen? It’s the 214th outfit today you don’t like?” (apparently I talk to myself a lot…super normal right?). The sassier voice ended up winning out (doesn’t it always?), I tried the dress and vest on together and lo and behold, it worked! Then I figured, if I am breaking one rule of mine, I might as well break another right? So I threw on my silver loafers and my gold necklace and voila, I had an outfit made up of rule breakin’ magic that I loved. Does this mean I have to give low rise jeans another try? (Please no.)
