As I mentioned in my Sunday Seven, it is Design Week here in the Lou. For the uninitiated, Design Week was started five years ago as a way to promote, inspire, and connect the creative community here in St. Louis. Over the course of the week, there are all sorts of fun panels, talks, competitions, networking events, and tours of the local studios (which are enough to give anyone major workplace envy. I’m talking about see-saws in the lobby and pools on the roof. Seriously). Earlier this week, I attended a wonderful panel discussion about Women in Design where four local designers/entrepreneurs/smart cookies/lady bosses talked about what it means to be a creative working woman in business today. It was a super inspirational and empowering and it got me thinking a lot about our present climate and how glad I am to be a part of the Wonder Woman cause.
We live in a time when it’s so easy to be negative and cynical about the state of the world, but there are also so many amazing things happening too if you just take a moment to look around. From Malala Yousafzai to Girls Who Code to Ask Her More to Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls, there are girls everywhere who are standing up and demanding to be counted. It’s so easy to get complacent in life and create a billion excuses as to why you can’t do that one thing you wanted to do. Sometimes it takes a morning surrounded by some HBICs to remind you that the only person stopping you from achieving your goals ultimately is you. In the words of everyone’s favorite BFF-of-our-dreams, Mindy Kaling, “‘Why the fuck not me?’ should be your motto”.
So, in the interest of paying it forward and passing wisdom along to my fellow soul sisters, here’s what I’m taking with me through the rest of my week (month, year, life, whatever): Never stop. Never stop learning. Never stop growing. Never stop striving. Never stop dreaming of something bigger and better than whatever you’re at now. Never. Stop.
